Tuscany vs. the Amalfi Coast: Which Italian Dream Is Yours?

What’s your favorite place in Italy?

It’s a question I get asked all the time, and honestly—it’s a tough one to answer.

My heart is deeply tied to Tuscany. I studied in Florence for a year, and it’s where I truly fell in love with Italian culture. It’s also where I finally broke through the barrier of learning a second language. The food? Out of this world. Think hearty pastas and perfectly grilled steaks paired with a bold Chianti red. It’s the heart of Italy’s culinary soul.

But then… there’s the Amalfi Coast.

It’s grand, dramatic, and absolutely awe-inspiring. Summer on the coast is pure magic—a refreshing dip in the clear Mediterranean, boat rides past pastel cliffside villages, endless seafood, white wine, and, of course, those famous lemons.

The truth is… I can’t choose a favorite region.

And the good news is—you don’t have to either.

You can’t go wrong with Tuscany or the Amalfi Coast.

The better question is: What kind of Italian experience are you dreaming of?

Tuscany is home to Florence (Firenze), one of my all-time favorite cities in the world. Picture cobblestone streets, Renaissance art and architecture, open-air markets, and candlelit trattorias serving food that makes you close your eyes in joy.

Step outside the city, and you’re in postcard territory—rolling hills, cypress trees, olive groves, and medieval towns that feel frozen in time. Some of my favorites? Montepulciano, Montalcino, and Pienza. And if you're into white wines, don’t miss San Gimignano—home of the crisp and refreshing Vernaccia di San Gimignano.

If your ideal day includes wine tastings with panoramic views, leisurely drives through golden landscapes, hand-rolled pasta with tomato or wild boar sauce, and shopping for fine leather goods—Tuscany is calling.

🌊 Amalfi Coast: La Dolce Vita by the Sea

The Amalfi Coast stretches from Positano to Amalfi and is dotted with cliffside villages, winding roads, and breathtaking views of the sea. Technically, it doesn’t include Sorrento—but I always include it in the mix because it makes the perfect home base.

Why?

Sorrento is walkable, flat (rare for this region!), filled with charming shops and restaurants, and it gives you easy access to not only the Amalfi Coast but also Capri and Pompeii. It strikes a nice balance of locals and tourists, with a laid-back vibe that I love.

Logistics can be tricky along the coast—getting around Positano, for example, often means lots of stairs and packed buses. But if you’re craving that classic beachside escape, I recommend Praiano. It’s a quieter town next to Positano with jaw-dropping views, delicious seafood, and a peaceful, romantic feel.

If your dream day includes soaking up the sun, fresh seafood with lemon, boat rides, swimming in turquoise water, and sipping white wine as the sun dips into the Mediterranean, Amalfi might be your perfect fit!

✨ Still Torn?

Rome + Tuscany and Rome + Amalfi Coast are two of my most popular itineraries for small group trips and Dental CE experiences—and for good reason. They each offer a perfect blend of culture, beauty, and unforgettable moments.

Still not sure which one’s right for you?

Send me a message. I’d love to help you choose the Italian escape that fits your style, your pace, and your dreams.
